WELCOME TO THE BRIDGES PROJECT

BRIDGES Policy Experimentation Action aims to demonstrate how education systems can create new levels of awareness and work towards a sustainable future, by developing innovative pathways for building sustainability competences. Specifically, it focuses on teaching for Sustainability Citizenship (SC), a concept that integrates principles of sustainability into the roles, responsibilities, and rights of citizens. It is a form of citizenship that acknowledges the importance of balancing economic, social, and environmental aspects to ensure a sustainable future for all.

BRIDGES project started in April 2025 and for the following 36 months aims to set and produce different pathways of reform towards a more innovative, effective and standard-based approach to teaching for SC, to disseminate methods and exemplary cases of both effective introduction of inquiry to science classrooms and professional development programmes, to support the adoption of inquiry based teaching by demonstrating ways to reduce the constraints presented by teachers and school organisation and finally to deliver a competence and qualification framework for the educational community to further explore and exploit the unique benefits of the proposed approach in environmental education

BRIDGES project is grounded on the concept of sustainability citizenship (SC). Climate change-relevant SC skills include the ability to recognise the environmental, social and economic dimensions of climate change, the ability to connect local actions and initiatives to global processes, and the capacity to move from analysis to systematic action on climate change. In this section we describe a) the concept of Sustainability Citizenship that is rooted to long term research in the field and b) the concept of Learning Ecologies, as the context of implementation of activities that promote SC.

The project methodology is based on three key pillars, the introduction of a whole school approach for the development of sustainability citizenship, the changing role of the teacher and the design of an effective assessment methodology based on standardized mechanisms and tools.

Project’s specific objectives are:

  • The development of standard-based approach on teaching for sustainability citizenship.
  • The Definition and Selection of Best Practices on teaching and learning for SC.
  • The development of a community of practitioners of SC who will share leading practices and influence the national reform efforts.
  • The implementation of a large number of educational (including teachers’ and school heads professional development) activities that will facilitate the effective integration of SC to the national curricula.
  • The design and implement a Systematic Impact Assessment Strategy of the BRIDGES interventions.
  • Implement a Systematic Dissemination, Clustering and Networking Strategy that will contribute to the effective dissemination of the project’s results and outcomes and which prepares the ground for their continuous improvement and sustainability.

The BRIDGES project is coordinated by the Institute of Educational Policy of the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs. The consortium consists of 11 carefully selected organisations from 7 European countries, representing a wide coverage of Europe’s regions and cultures. The consortium holds significant experience in policy development, pedagogical research, large scale experimentations in school settings, teachers professional development and rich prior EU project experience. Their added-value synergy as a pan-European team makes them the strongest assets of the project, ensuring the fulfillment of the project objectives and the ideal conditions for generating a very significant impact in the world of environmental education and teachers training.
